Secret's Commitment to the Women's Game
$1 Million donated for the Dream Gap Tour
Athletes like Hillary Knight, Kendall Coyne, Marie-Philip Poulin and Natalie Spooner have used their voices to advocate for the women's game. Them and at least 121 other female hockey players have walked away from the NWHL to push for equal OPPORTUNITY to play the game they have grown up and love. They understood the model of the NWHL was not sustainable and it lead to the closing of the Canadian League last year.
In walking away from the only professional women's league in North America, they understood the need to do something bigger, something greater, something that could be used to inspire the next generation of female hockey player. Knowing they are working and building a foundation for the future of women's hockey. The money being donated by Secret will help to keep that "Thing" going. The "Dream Gap Tour" is looking to come back with a tournament style format this year, all leading up to the "Secret Cup"
Last years Dream Gap Tour inspired thousands of young female hockey players to lace up the skates, pick up the twigs and start taking the fastest and greatest game to heart. Seeing some of the greatest talent on the ice as they traveled across North America showing young hockey girls were awestruck.
“As a brand committed to empowering and emboldening women, we can’t stand by and see gender equality unravel. Secret® proudly stands with the PWHPA and its players to fight for a new professional league to ensure all players – regardless of gender – are given the same chance and support to play,” says Secret® Senior Brand Director Lisa Reid. “Hockey is Canada’s sport, and this issue is both symbolic and pervasive. Countless women are being told they don’t deserve the same opportunities as men; tackling professional hockey equity is our first, but not last, fight. The PWHPA and its players represent the top athletes in the sport who deserve to have the same opportunities as the men.”
This year, the Dream Gap Tour will have stops in - Minnesota, New Hampshire, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal. Of course, we would love to see it grow and add even more stops in North America (Chicago...Detroit...etc) but we do agree that most of the Men's Professional Sports leagues are starting to fire up, get moving and have plans to return to competition, if they have not already, the Women's Sports have taken a back seat again. Having limited access to training facilities, needed surfaces for practice times etc. WE have noticed this all the way down to the youth level in our area. It is great to see a company like Secret boosting the game!
Hockey is for everyone! and we would LOVE to see the Professional Women's game grow!
