Cammie Granato Working to Grow the Game of Girls Hockey

Cammie Granato is one of the faces of Women’s Hockey in the United States and in the World. Having come from a family rich in hockey and being one of the first women inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame back in 2010.   Having won a

Gold Medal as Captain of the 1998 US Women’s Team to currently being a professional scout for the newly formed Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League,  she isn’t slowing down in the hockey realm.

She is once again in the headlines of women’s and girls hockey in a positive way.  She is working with FlipGive to provide $500 Grants to  21 young girls in the United States so that they can play hockey as well.  This also includes a partnership with the NHL, NHLPA and Pure Hockey that gives equipment valued at $300 as well.

“Young girls are seeing women play hockey at a high-level and saying they want to do the same,” explained Granato. “Anything that can be done to help the game in any way is a positive and I’m really happy that I can be part of this and make a difference in someone’s life.”  As a leader and a figure of women's hockey, this means a lot coming from Granato.  She is a direct force of inspiration and motivation for so many young ladies, and through this project and grant, she will touch so many more.  She can and will continue to make a difference in so many lives.

Hockey to many is a lifelong passion, and people they have met along the way are remembered and befriended. Many times those friendships last the test of time.  Women’s hockey has enjoyed the growth in recent years and is one of the fastest growing sports in North America.  With the US / Canada Rivalry series, the Secret “Dream Gap Tour,” The Toronto Six joining the NWHL and women taking up important roles in professional hockey.  Blake Bolden with the LA Kings, Ms. Granato with the Seattle Kraken to name a couple.

We need young girls to know that they are capable of AND performing in the sport and that it if they want to play, play!  “I just want them to know that someone’s supporting them, that someone’s behind them and is wanting to help them out and that they matter,” said Granato. “It’s about the opportunity as well. The word opportunity is important too because potentially we’re giving someone the opportunity to find the joy that I found in the game by being able to play.”

Now there are a few rules and guidelines to entry,  the biggest one is that all submissions are in fact due by November 30th 2020, which doesn’t provide much time.  This program is geared towards the younger ladies, so in order to qualify, the candidate has to be between 4 and 12 years of age and a current US Resident.  One thing that we are excited about with this contest is that girls who are just starting out, involved in camps, on a team, playing Ringette or Sled are also able to submit for one of the grants.

Another thing that makes this opportunity unique, is that it really does follow the Hockey Family mentality and that we are all in this together.  The girls who are selected, well their Coach will also get a year membership to the Coaching Site.  This site is chalked full of drills, concepts, stations and follows along with USA Hockey in the most effective use of practice times.  So not only is this Grant helping out a young lady, but it is also helping out her entire team!

One of the biggest struggles of growing the game is bringing attention to the game, making young ladies confident in playing the greatest game.  Knowing

that they are able to lace up the skates with the girls AND keep up with the boys.  I know our mission at Gurl Power Athletics is to grow the game AND the awareness of girls hockey and the joys it can bring.

Thank you FlipGive, the NHL and NHLPA, Pure Hockey and Cammie Granato for helping girls play hockey and giving them the opportunity to experience something great.
